We were supposed to shoot up to 40 pictures for this assignment, right? How about 214? That’s how many I took and most of them were no good. It is already becoming easier to tell which ones to chuck. I am so happy with this class!

It was an extremely difficult assignment. The main challenge was to formulate, which pictures are not going to drive me crazy or bore me to death the first day of the trip. Another challenge was that, although I would love to frolic with a camera through the sand dunes on the ocean shore at sunset, but I could not possibly go to location any time soon. Well… As a result I worked out the direction to go and I went from there taking any photo op possible.

Firstly, I wanted the pictures to be as beautiful as possible (under the light conditions, location and set management circumstances).

Secondly, they should represent something that I like and relate to mentally, physically (sight, smell, touch) and emotionally.
Thirdly, pictures should not have repetitive regular patterns. If you ever had wallpaper on in your bedroom, you know what I mean. At first, it is all-beautiful, but soon you find a spot of irregularity and you are doomed. All you can see it the spot.
And last but not least, the pictures should not depress me, but motivate me to stay in shape mentally and physically. So therefore the set.
The pictures that I would put on my right (at least for the first ten years of the trip) will be 03 and 02. I can directly relate to Jeff, my husband, whos clutter and intelligent eyes represent our crazy, frantic but glorious age of information revolution and discovery. Another image is of my workout buddies from the gym. Here is Heather, Sara, Michelle…, they are a bit blurry, but as motivated as ever and are embodiments of ‘no pain, no gain’ motto. Human spirit at its best.
I am sure I will enjoy the picture of the rose that my daughter Margaret is reaching out to touch but not touching. Beauty and human emotions are represented here.
Here is an interior photo from my house that I decorated to remind me of the ocean and beaches that I love. On the background there is my canvas photo of Charlie on a beach (if you can’s make it, fake it.). And of course, Charlie with his LEGO class testing solar powered cars…. We all gravitate to our star, we need its live giving light.
I think I could live with these five pictures. They would definitely work as icebreakers for conversations with creatures from another world.
Which pictures I would take, if I had unlimited time and budget is another story.

THREE THINGS I LEARNED THIS WEEK 1. Depth of field does exist on my point and shoot camera. It added another dimension to my shots. 2. Once I found exposure setting I have immediately become addicted to it especially, then shooting brightly illuminated objects with sharp shadow. 3. Applying gradient fill to photographs can save a hopelessly flat photo by directing viewers eye to where a photographer needs to.
