Thomas Heatherwick To Design Yorkshire Cancer Centre

The growth of Maggie’s Centres continues with the announcement that Thomas Heatherwick is to design a brand new centre in the grounds of Jimmy’s hospital near Leeds City Centre.

Heatherwick, famous for his innovate designs such as the Seed Cathedral, said it was an honour to be appointed and that he was looking forward to the project where his role is “to make a special place that will support and encourage people affected by cancer and inspire the staff that work with them.”

Maggie’s Chief Executive, Laura Lee is a big admirer of Heatherwick’s work and is continuing the trend of appointing top designers to design their centres. The list of those who have already designed a centre reads like a who’s who of top designers and includes the likes of Norman Foster, Richard Rodgers, Zaha Hadid and Frank Gehry.

Explaining her reasoning she commented that “Great architecture is vital to the care that Maggie’s offers and Heatherwick Studio is renowned for its inventive approach to design and it’s ability to truly get the best out of a space.

He will certainly need to be as the £5 million centre will be situated in the grounds of the hospital which already has numerous single and multi-storey buildings in place making the design job much harder.
